Step-by-step download instructions
This page contains step-by-step instructions for downloading and installing the materials and software required for the workshop. It will guide you through how to access (A) the workshop materials that we have created, (B) Experiment Builder and DataViewer, (C) the Get Reading Measures application, and (D) R and R studio.
We kindly ask that you download and install all required software programmes before the workshop. No time will be set aside during the session for software setup, so having everything ready in advance will help ensure that the workshop runs smoothly. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions.
A. Workshop materials
Please download the folder “workshop_materials” using this link. Save the entire folder on the Desktop of your Laptop PC.
In this folder, you will find five different files:
-
reading_task_template.ebz – a compressed version of a reading experiment template to open in Experiment Builder demo version
-
dv – a folder containing two sample participant data files to open in Data Viewer demo version
-
fixation_report.xls – a sample reading experiment dataset to open with the Get reading measures application
-
reading task handout.docx - a handout to consult before the workshop and use during the workshop in the session on Experiment Builder
-
list of recommended readings.docx – our recommended general readings and specific empirical studies involving eye tracking in psycholinguistics and translation and interpreting studies
B. Experiment Builder and DataViewer
Follow the steps below to download the demo versions of Experiment Builder and DataViewer. Note: The demo versions are only temporary; they will expire exactly one month after you download them. Please also note that the steps below may take a few days to complete, so we strongly encourage you to begin the process at least one week before the workshop. To download the required software, please carefully follow these steps:
Step 1: Register for an account with SR research support via this link: SR Support Forum - Registration Agreement. In the form on the next page (after you read and agree with the terms), choose “EyeLink Portable Duo” under EyeLink System and enter your contact and affiliation details. Your registration will be approved by SR research within 48 hours of submitting the form. You will receive a confirmation e-mail with your login details. Make sure to check your spam folder for this e-mail. If you don’t get the confirmation e-mail within 48 hours, write to support@sr-research.com and they will help you.
Step 2: Once you have your login details, use them to sign in and go to SR Support Forum - Downloads. Download both Experiment Builder 2.6.11 and DataViewer. For each, choose the version that corresponds to your operating system (Mac or Windows).
Step 3: Once you have downloaded Experiment Builder, open “reading_task_template.ebz”. You will be prompted to Unpack the file, click on OK. This will automatically create a folder on your Desktop with the experiment file (called “graph”) and its dependencies. We will explain this further during the workshop.
Step 4: Once you have downloaded DataViewer, open the participant data file “dv.edf”. You will be prompted to Unpack the file, click on OK. This will automatically create a folder on your Desktop with the DataViewer session file, the output folder where all analysis reports you create in DataViewer are saved, and dependencies. We will also explain this further during the workshop.
C. Get Reading Measures application
Download the Get Reading Measures application from the SR research support forum for Mac or Windows, depending on your operating system.
D. R and R Studio
Install R and download R Studio via this page: RStudio Desktop - Posit. Note: Although you will only need R Studio, you still need to install R as a pre-requisite for downloading R Studio.
Step 1: Install R (you will not use this programme in the workshop, just make sure it is installed on your PC)
Step 2: Download R Studio for Windows. If you are a Mac user, scroll down the download page for a list of download options. Choose the one corresponding to your operating system.
Step 3: Once you have downloaded R Studio, open it and go to File > New File > R Script.
